Wood-firing Jamboree, Millstone Pottery, McGregor

12, 13 & 14 October, 2018

This is an opportunity to experience the magic in the heart of the kiln. Inviting potters, ceramicists and other romantics to a week-end celebrating the ancient and time-honoured process of wood-firing. Demonstrations, workshops, wood-firing, talks, good food and more.

Potters and aspiring wood-firers, you don’t have to own a kiln to wood-fire! Gain a deeper understanding of wood-firing practices and techniques by participating in this year’s Jamboree. Participants are offered an opportunity to place their pots in two cross-draft train kilns.

Workshops and presenters confirmed so far:

Nina Shand and Paul de Jongh (www.millstonepottery.co.za)Understanding the fundamentals of wood-firing

Over the course of the weekend, learn about loading and stacking, glazes, clay bodies, wadding, types of wood, combustion cycles, problem solving, kiln designs, collaboration, and the effect of the firing on the pots. There will also be a slide presentation. Paul and Nina have been firing wood-kilns together for over 20 years and have a wealth of knowledge between them to share with you.

Rika Herbst (https://bohlokoastudio.wordpress.com)‘Paper Porcelain’ workshop

This workshop will explore paper clay as a versatile medium especially suited for handwork. Working with paper clay and exploring qualities of translucency, weightlessness and building ease, participants will be encouraged to test the medium and expand on their own individual ideas. The workshop will include information on clay preparation, demonstrations and building techniques for using paper clay and this will be balanced with demo watching and studio construction time.

Rika will also give a slide presentation about her own work.

Lissa Claasen (www.earthplaystudio.com)‘The Wonders of Slip’ workshop

In this workshop, Lissa and her daughter Natasha Viljoen (www.clayhands.co.za), will demonstrate the wonders of slip in all its permutations – combing, feathering and trailing with yummy poured slip. They will also demonstrate the making and use of ultra thick slip for a textured surface. Participants will have a chance to play with the magic of tobacco-tea, 'mocha diffusion' for spidery patterns, and marbling, working into easy slumped bowls and tiles. This workshop offers a chance for some relaxed and rewarding learning.

Sarah Walters (www.sarahwalters.co.za)Surface Decoration on Clay Workshop

Explore three different surface decoration techniques in this workshop with Cape Town potter Sarah Walters. In this participatory workshop, Sarah will demonstrate some of the decorative techniques she uses in her studio practice and will show you how a little experimentation can add interest and depth to your work. Participants will make small tiles and use them to apply and learn these various approaches, including Sarah’s black and white "Lino cut" method, cobalt inlay and the use of cold wax to create surface texture.
